Montana City Fire Responds to Grass Fire on I-15

Saturday, August 9, 2008

Montana City - Fourteen Montana City Volunteer Fire Department members responded early Saturday evening to a grass fire along the east side of Interstate 15, just south of mile marker 189.

Fortunately for nearby homeowners, there was mutual aid from Clancy VFD, DNRC, Helena Fire Department and the Helena National Forest to assist MCVFD so the fire did not have a chance to grow very large. Additionally, Montana Highway Patrol and Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy, Kevin St. George, provided traffic control in an attempt to keep the scene as safe as possible for the firefighters.

Citizens of the county are reminded that in spite of recent passing rain showers, fire fuels remain very, very dry and the fire danger is very high. The grass that burned in this fire had received a small amount of rain from a passing shower, but kept on burning. Please exercise extreme caution with your outdoor activities.

MCVFD firefighters, Larry and Dee Alheim, work to cool the fireground. Notice the homes in the background of this photo. Had mutual aid assistance not arrived on scene promptly, with gusting southwest winds at the time of the fire, it would not have taken very long for the fire to reach them.
