Montana City Volunteer Fire Department

About Us

The Montana City Volunteer Fire Department is an all volunteer fire department serving one of the fastest growing fire districts in the state of Montana, as well as being part of the 4th fastest growing county in the state of Montana. As a bedroom community adjoining Helena (pop. 25,780), the 2000 Census showed 2,400 people living in our district; current estimates conducted by Jefferson County show over 3000 district residents. The 25-year growth plan estimates a population increase of over 10,000 residents. Within our district there are 6 miles of Interstate 15 and several miles of Burlington Northern East-West rail line. Thirty-three percent of our district is on State and Federal Lands. In addition, we respond to wildland fires on more than 50,000 acres of neighboring Forest Service land. There are over 1,000 homes in the district, many of them with high exposure to wildland fire threats. Our proximity to federal forests, our rapidly growing population, and our proximity to the urban areas of Helena requires our incident interaction with a wide variety of federal, state, and local fire and first responders.

The Montana City Volunteer Fire Department is responsible for responding to structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents/extrication/fires, and hazardous materials incidents. We operate out of two stations with an Engine, Tender, and Squad or Brush in each.

Montana City Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1979 by several concerned citizens. A 1956 Seagraves Engine, the departments first apparatus, was stored in a member's garage. After years of the efforts by the Members and the Board of Trustees, today the department is proud to say it has seven pieces of apparatus that are housed in two fire stations. The Department continues to strive to bring the community, to which it serves, the finest protection possible.
